"ANDREA KATZ INTERVIEW with Mauricio Pavón" AVK: The strong sport-related stimulus that I received in the Ward School from Ramos Mejía during elementary and secondary school, steered me towards the Master in Physical Education Profesor, as soon as I finished high school. I knew that I didn’t want to teach in schools. On a trip to California I learnt about an exercise technique called “Jazzercise.” That was when I knew what my calling was. It was during 1983, when everybody started to flock in the gyms, and music accompanied the boring and rigid gym classes making them more pleasant. Some followed the strict trend marked by the "Aerobics" and Jane Fonda’s Workout. I chose a technique called "Jazzercise"
created by Judy Shepard (Jazzercise) which consists in moving the rhythm
of good music in an easy and fun way, while working all your muscles.
This technique does not require physical skills and that is why people
absolutely love it. So, I thought "I want to apply it in Argentina",
I want that anybody, regardless of age, physical condition or gender can
enjoy moving at the rhythm of good music. I was 21 when I headed to the
patent and trademark office and I registered the name “Jazzercise” as
my copyright.Every time I went to Los Angeles
I attended courses and brought new material. In 1984, a record company, Abraxas Producciones, which at that time was representing singer León Gieco, proposed that I gave a performance in the Coliseo Theater, which I repeated the following year due to the great success achieved in the first performance. HOW DO YOU ADJUST A PRODUCT AIMED AT SMALL SOCIAL GROUP TO MASSIVE MARKET? M: How did you decide to take the classes to the mass media? AVK: I knew that TV was a fundamental differentiator media and I believed that my product would attract the massive market.Medical Doctor Cormillot proposed me to accompany him in his TV program “Su salud al día” (Keep up to date with health)”, directing the gym segment. After that I decided to carry my own broadcast. I managed to have two simultaneous shows, a morning one in ATC, broadcasted daily, and subsequently in Channel 13 called "Jazz Time" and another one called "Jazz and Katz" that was broadcasted in cable television. A short while later, advertising agency Lautrec Publicidad, co-producer of the TV program, decided it was high time to take the success to the beaches and, promoted by one of his clients, we complete two widely acclaimed seasons in the Buenos Aires beaches. More than a thousand people attended the classes. It was a great experience. M: Is it true that you rejected a film proposal not to interfere with your goals within the sport field? AVK: Yes … (She laughs as she recalls the anecdote) ![]() M: It is not easy to say "no" to such an attractive proposal. I bet you had many proposals after the beauty contest. AVK: That’s true, even more since I was the first Argentine and the youngest girl that ever won the contest, even producers and agencies were interested in me. I immediately realized that it was difficult to say “no" to those proposals since everybody likes the lime light. But I loved sports and had a very active life. M: But fame is like the “apple”. How did you resist temptation? AVK: I always treated fame very cautiously. I incorporated it in my work life but I always kept it away from my private life. The only idea of how disruptive it could be not to be able to sit quietly in a café, terrified me. I was not ready to pay such a high price. But I must confess that I always suffered the loss of making such a decision. M: I am more and more intrigued, not only by the versatile character of this woman but also for the easiness with which she tackled challenging experiences. I know this picture I have here right now has nothing to do with your work life, but, what are you doing with Vinicius drinking white wine? AVK: Actually,
it was a intense experience (not because of the wine at 10 am) –
Says Katz and smiles again-. I was on
vacation at a Brazilian friends’ house in Punta del Este. They were all
musicians and I joined them with my C flute, which I also learned at the
Ward School (and its well recognized high school music band). One day,
my friend asked me to accompany her to interview Vinicius at his home
(she was a journalist) and there we went. We had a long chat with him
and his wife, Marta. |
